Robert-child genius?

June 5, 2008

Robert Anthony Salazar looks like any ordinary teen at first glance. At 5 ft 11 inches he has a commanding presence for a 17 year old, and an easy way about him. But, then you talk to him. One knows immediately; this is no ordinary child.

I invite you to get to know this young man now, because in a few short years you will be saying…”I remember him when.”

“Do you hear it?

That inaudible frequency?

Not that of sound, but of light?

In the backgraound…

radiation, from the beginning of time.

Those microwaves rippling across space,

growing ever redder and ever nearner,

yet never ceasing to arrive.”

~Poem by Robert Salazar

Robert’s family history

Or Robert as he likes to be called now. Robert was named after his grandfather Robert Ellis Miller, who was an inventor in the 60’s. Out of his makeshift conveyor belt out of his garage in Burbank, Ca-on Parrish St. to be exact-he manufactured and produced a multitude of products that he later sold to investors in which they patened. Those products are now being used every day in main stream America and abroad. They include 1) The first ‘tape’ on diapers. 2) The first chemical ingredient in ‘roach stunners’, that became the first ‘roach killers’, and Raid was born. 3) The colored polyurethane pool lights in the 70’s & 80’s. 4) And the big debate is he swears that he and a partner (that took his money and ran later) opened the first ‘Drive-threw’ restaurant in Burbank, Ca. Mc Donald’s claims it, Big Boy claims it, In & Out claims it. I’m still looking into that. There are a number of other smaller inventions that Robert Sr discovered.

Robert is a descendant Richard Stockton (NJ), one of The Signers of Declaration of Independence. His other notable descendent’s are Senator Theodore of Oklahoma (Oklahoma run participant), Elias Budinot, Hedda Hopper (by marriage-his grandfather married her niece, Jane Furry), George Washington Roper to name a few.

These were some of his most recent awards. In the area of discipline- He has been on some of the drill teams that placed 1st, 2nd, or 3rd at the State Drill Competition. (Just getting to the state level is a high honor). California Cadet Corps Website “Most Outstanding Cadets”. Since elementary school, he has been in the Gifted program, and also scored in the high 500’s & 600’s on test scores as well as being placed in all Advanced studies.

The way he relates to math is not like you and I do. According to him, “I do not want math to limit my observation.” So he invents math as he goes along. He has ’self taught’ himself high level math due to his frustration early on due to the lack of resources at the public school he attended. He started Algebra 2 in middle school, and by the 10th grade finished Calculus. He is currently taking Analytical Geometry. (The study of math describing space). One of his future goals with math is to “explain Physics” he says. His long term goals are to become a Quantum Physicist and electrical engineer.

This has changed over the years, where he has been interested, and still is in Astronomy and Aerospace. He says his ultimate goal is to “Unify fields of Quantum Physics and Relativity” currently. He has stated that he wants to create or invent something that will help the planet. He has thought of ideas of mining the moon and Mars for energy for Earth. He has also been interested in working with NASA and helping designing space vehicles and structures.

In the fifth grade he built a teslacoil with the help of his friend Richard, and again at 14 years old he did it again for the science fair’s at school. He also gives himself projects that are very difficult. The teachers used to think that he used to have help from an adult, but quickly saw this was his own creation due to the complex formulas that he worked on in class. He enjoys creating new math theories and cannot wait to get to a four year university like MIT, Harvard or Standford so that he can test his theories.

This summer he will be attending Lead America’s Robotic and Engineering program for 10 days in Washington DC with other student leaders. His plans for his 11th grade summer is to intern at the Pasadena’s Jet Propulsion Lab.

Hobbies

Although he is a naturally gifted athlete, organized sports are entertaining but not of interest. Although he will out run by two or three laps anyone in track and field, or play a mean game of football -his heart is in the outdoors. He has watched every show on the Discovery Channel for years, studies many different maps, and has spent long hours with Google Maps Satalite studying the trails and terrain of many mountain ranges. He has planned and hiked many trails alone, but his greatest feat and accomplishment outdoors was his hike over the San Bernardino Mountain Range in California. He hiked over a 6,000 ft mountain to Silver Lake, Ca. Studying the wildlife, the animal hibernation and migration patterns beforehand has helped gain the confidence to accomplish such a task. His years of experience in hiking alone gave him the agility and ability to endure such a difficult task that lasted over 8 hours one way. He plans on doing many more hikes.

Due to his interested in complex math it naturally gave way to Origami. He has been folding for 7 years and the style that he is studying to master is ‘Sekkei’ which is a very difficult origami. He started out using patterns, but now only resorts to visuals. He “can fold anything”, and has just entered his angel fish (done without a pattern) and gecko and fly origami in his high school’s Student Art Festival. His goal is to become an Origami Master, which for most would be a life long achievement. For Robert it will be sooner than that due to the fact he is already creating his own origami, such as the raptor. What he enjoys most is the challenge of coarse, but the ‘technical folding with algorithms is what makes it fun. He collects paper from everywhere, and the finer and more delicate the better. He has done math formulations along with the origami he folds. An interesting fact; he discovered a way to use binary numbers to see if a particular pattern was do-able before he even started.

With his interest in ‘how things work’, it also followed through to the eco-systems of many environments. The one he could actually control and manipulate is the back yard of his grandma’s house. He has raised healthy crops of unusual plants, including a Mediterranean plant that has not been introduced to that region yet. Now it flourishes. He plants specific vegetables and foliage that he knows will have a positive or negative influence on the insect and flower population. He has experimented with cross-pollinating different trees and flowers resulting in unique species. He enjoys planting trees, and will collecting seeds from many different types of plants and vegetables.

There is so much more than this to encompass this young man. Besides his gentle patience he shows to his two youngest baby sisters and his bigger patience he shows with his four younger sisters it is amazing he has been able to focus on such accomplishments in such a large house hold. He is a talented actor, and would be phenomenal on stage professionally as his debut in a school play illustrates. He is a gifted story teller, and will recount step by step his adventures in the wild down to the very brush under his feet. His sense of detail is astounding and being this articulate has also come in handy when he rides his quad over the sand dunes in Glamis, Ca. He has a playful side too, he is not all about science and math. His sense of humor is dryer than birch wood and and he is quick to smile.

He has studied himself and others in their way of interacting with each other, and their chosen reactionary mind. He studies ontology as an observation and his created a peaceful life for himself regardless of what ever is going on around him. He says he relates to Einstein, and was surprised in reading his auto-biography that he had many similar behavioral characteristics and experiences. He is interested in being mentored by a Physicists. He once said he would love to be President, and if he continues on this path, he very well might be. If he doesn’t invent something first.

To Whom It May Concern:

I am pleased to write this letter of recommendation for Robert Salazar. Robert was a student at North Park Elementary School during the years that I served as Principal at that site. I first met Robert when he was in third grade. After he graduated from 6th grade, he would return to visit on occasion, often as a representative of the Cadet Corps program at the middle school. Robert is an exceptional student with extraordinary intellectual abilities. His intelligence set him apart from his peers, making it difficult for him to socialize in the usual ways. He was able to relate more readily with adults than with children his own age.

Robert would benefit from a customized education tailored to meet his unique needs. Robert is interested in physics and science classes that he can not get in his current high school. I urge you to review his record and consider him as a candidate at your school.

Sincerely,
Lynn Kvalheim
Principal
