*Message to Republicans who say I was never a Republican: I have heard this from different ‘people’ on different sites. I find this very, weird. They don’t know me, they don’t know my history (they can look it up), but they definitely are upset that I am no longer a Republican. I have had hate mail, I have had mean-spirited comments on many blogs. The problem is, the more they act like hate-mongers, the more I am glad I no longer am in that party. And, it is sad. When I was a police officer I had health insurance. But, since I am no longer one, and am self employed-I no longer can afford health insurance. The true colors of the followers of the war rally have been exposed…and they are screaming mad. They are no longer the Righteous Right. God Bless America.

Not only is this a strait forward open letter to Sarah Palin, but included at the end is the facts on WHERE THE CANDIDATES STAND ON THE ISSUES. No one can claim ignorance. This is about facts, truth and lies.
I am a 35-year-old working, middle class mother of five living in So. California . I have been a Republican since my great ancestor Richard Stockton, signed the Declaration of Independence. I am an ex-police officer, and now I own my own business.
But this is the first time I have had to change my party. I am voting for Obama and Biden. I have watched both conventions closely. I have studied the issues. I have read articles on major news networks and blogs. I have listened to NPR, radio talk shows, and television shows. And last night I saw Sarah Palin’s speech. So after that I determined that this election, I am making the right choice.
My family got hit with the economy’s upward spiral of surging gas prices, and we have no health care. We have felt it at the grocery store. We now shop at the 99 cents store. We have lost one of our vehicles, on the verge of losing our home and are three months behind an astonishing amount of debt that we once were able to afford.

This election, I am taking my life back, I am taking my country back. I have heard the arguments on both sides. I know Obama’s story, I know McCain’s story, and I got to know Biden’s. Now it is Sarah Palin’s turn. As I watched last night, I was waiting just like the rest of us to see what she was going to say. Now I was going to get to know her. The fact that she has five children (whether or not the fifth baby is hers or not), and she has this unbelievably fortunate position of running for Vice President, I cannot help but to root for her.
I know how hard it is to raise five children. I have a 16-year-old, 15-year-old, 12-year-old, 4-year-old, and 2-year-old. I know how hard it is to juggle between working and raising my children. I have tried the stay-at-home route, especially when the children were months old–but always had to go back to work to have the extra income. I chose to own my own business because that was the only way I could make enough to meet the high cost of a family of seven.
I chose to have a large family, and we have not had the type of economic hardships as we are having now. We have not been able to afford our large family expenses, our house (that we lease, not own) and anything else. We have lots of conversations with potential projects and the such, but everything is months away.
I want to see a woman in office. I want to see a mother of five showing America “it can be done.” Of course I have concerns about how the children will manage without their mother. I know that a baby with Down Syndrome will take a lot of time, love and patience and that as Vice President there will be no physically possible way for her to be there the amount of time needed. So essentially, her husband will take on that role, or her family. Like any mother, you cannot help but have your attention focused on your kids, your family–even while you work.
It doesn’t mean you cannot perform excellently. It does not mean that a mother cannot make powerful decisions and be completely reliable and competent. I was a single mother with three children and a police officer. It can be done.
I created a blog, Thank God For Mommy(http://www.ThankGodForMommy.com),where I dispel the notion that just because you are a mom you can’t reach for your dreams, that you can’t have it all. I talk about everything from paintings to filming two movies pregnant as a co-producer, one here in the states and another in Cuba . I talk about how I continue to make films, and I continue to pursue my physical fitness, continue to educate myself and live a life for myself and my children. My four daughters and one son see that I make it happen.
So, when I saw Sarah Palin on the ticket, I thought, “Wow, this is validating.” I loved the fact she is a mother of five and worried at the same time. This is a huge country. This is not Wasilla , Alaska , population7,025(R1). I cannot, we cannot, afford another four years and I am scared to death to let a Republican in the White House, but Sarah–she might be the one to make a difference.
So she gets on stage, and she looks great. Then she starts to talk. I waited for her to talk about her family. But all she did was talk about how many kids she has, and the fact she has a special needs baby. She talked about her husband and what a normal guy he is. She talked about being a pit bull hockey mom. But I was still waiting. I remember listening to Michelle Obama’s speech. She talked about her family, her roots, her beliefs, her parents, and grandparents.I got to know Michelle Obama that night.
Half way through Sarah’s speech, she started to lie, blatantly. Like really aggressive lying about Obama. The way she spoke about him, making fun of community service (wow) and that he has “devoted followers,” the stage he stood on, his trying to save the planet (like a world leader), how she twisted the words of things he said about running his campaign, etc., and on and on. She said we have no idea where Obama stands on anything, um — anyone who has a computer can just Google it for Godssakes. My jaw dropped. I thought she would take the higher road. I thought I was going to hear about who she is, but she talked about Obama, Obama, Obama. On and on she went. It got uglier and uglier and she got uglier and uglier.
Oh, no. I thought. This is more of the same. She fed the hate mongers in the crowd raw hate. They gobbled it up. Where was the speech about what type of person she is, her belief system, her values, her promises to our country? She seemed completely inauthentic and smug. “Shrill” is how one person put it.
I want to rally on the side of a working mother of five. I want to have compassion for her teen daughter’s pregnancy. I do. But the Right wing conservatives have been against premarital sex. Wasn’t Sarah’s stance also against it? Now, what? They are covering for one of their own?
Due to the fact that so many say they do not know where the parties stand, I put this together referencing from a unbiased site. All the major issues are on this list. I was surprised to find how little information there is on where Sarah Palin stands on issues, and on some (like immigration) there was just nothing. Obama’s in comparison was very lengthy. There are no excuses as to where the candidates stand on the issues. Here it is in black and white.

Reference: (1) According to the census bureau, the definitive source of US population figures, the last census tally, in 2000, revealed a population of 5,469. The bureau’s 2007 population estimate, had the town at 9,780 residents. The difference between the two figures is huge, approximately 79% growth, but there is no disputing it’s a small town, approximately one twentieth the size of Barack Obama’s Illinois state senate district.
Some CHOSEN responses to comments that deserved highlighting:
In response to mirmarston:
This is typical Republican attitude, so I am CHOOSING this one to make an example out of.
“I am sorry that you are having trouble making ends meet.”
–Really. Well, thanks for your pity, was not looking for any. Does me no good.
“However, you CHOOSE where you live,”
–Yes, I did. With four daughters, and one son I CHOSE to live in an area that my children do not have to be afraid of being shot in front of their house from drive-by’s or in front of their school like a 13 year old today.
“which is very highly overpriced compared to the majority of the nation.”
–I know. Its not easy. However our LIVELYHOOD is filmmaking. We CHOSE to make films for a living for many years. It so happens that the majority of that happens in Los Angeles. But, you are right-it is very expensive. Our commute is not bad since it is out of our home, and on set when we are filming.
“You CHOOSE your employment and health care.”
–If you are referring to my few years as a police officer, yes I did CHOOSE to serve my city, gladly. After I was a single mother leaving a domestically violent marriage I had to support my 3 children and myself. And I wanted to protect other women-which I did. However, my kids begged me to not work in such a dangerous occupation. The experience was invaluable. The health care always gouges any paycheck. No getting around that.
“You CHOOSE to have 5 children and take on the expense.”
–Love this one. Yes I did. The expense was Not. A. Problem. A few years back I can remember family trips to Cuba, Miami, New York, New Jersey, Oregon, Mexico and on and on. I can remember when I can afford gas, and I could afford utilities, I can afford to eat out with my kids. However, the ECONOMY changed. One kid, two kids, ten kids-no matter. The ECONOMY went down into the toilet, with it the housing market, gas prices you know, you live in the US, right? We have been fully capable of working, supporting our family, making five films, traveling and living a decent life. It started to go down hill three years ago in the sense that projects became more sparce-not just for us but everyone we know. In our field, and in other fields of work that are contract or commission based especially.
“Whether or not you CHOOSE to vote Republican or Democrat is also your choice.”
–Thats right. Just like it is yours. You will have to live with that CHOICE for the next four years.
“However, I will be voting Republican because I want a choice as to whether or not I will subsidize you and your family’s expenses.”
–I believe you would be supporting my familys expenses if I was on State Aid. Since I do not get any help, I do not see how you would subsidizing my expenses. Its truly arrogant and laughable assumption and type casting on your part.
However, if you had it your way, then if your little niece or cousin gets raped, she would have to keep that baby NO MATTER WHAT. Will you CHOSE to support her or not? Hmm?
“I CHOOSE to have a job that pays the majority of my health insurance.”
–Wow. Sounds really great for you. Im sure you are very happy with your lifelong career choice.
“I CHOOSE to live in an area where housing costs are 1/5 of yours.”
–Once again, I go back to the reality that Hollywood is one of the most intensive areas to produce films. However, if I wanted to make cars-I would go to Detroit. Wait-I mean China.
“I CHOOSE not to have children because I can’t afford them.”
–Well, the debate is out on this one as to why people CHOOSE to not have children. It is not for everyone. It is definitely for people who care for children, and it is one of the most selfless acts a human being can do-is become a parent and raise a child. I raise human beings that will go into the world and make a difference in our planet. My 16 year old has won three Congress and Senate awards for COMMUNITY SERVICE & Leadership. If people CHOOSE to wait to have children when they can afford them, they may never have them. Period. And I thought you were financially doing fine, or which one is it?
“And I CHOOSE to vote Republican to keep you and other people’s hands off of my paycheck.”
–LOL. Ok. From what it sounds like you dont have much on your check to begin with even if I wanted your paycheck. The only time I will take your money from you is when your watching one of my movies. (which of coarse youll go out of your way not too-its okay). So, the ASSUMING that I am on welfare, and the ASSUMING that you are paying for us, makes you look a little silly now does it?
“I am all about people making choices, but I do believe in the saying, “You made your bed, now lie in it.”"
–That’s right. However, the beauty of clichsis that the thinking person doesn’t need the mind break. I CHOSE two Bush’s into office. And you will watch me and however many people I can bring with me to CHOOSE them right back out. I smart enough to not make that CHOICE again.

We’re sending a strong message to John McCain and the right-wing patriarchs: American women will not be fooled – and using Sarah Palin for political gain is an insult not only to her but to every American voter, both male and female.
We make such a strong statement, in fact, that we might as well get our message to a larger audience outside of Facebook. There is now a Wiki webpage for the group, which can be viewed athttp://palinisnohrc.wetpaint.com/
This site will house all of the links to articles, blogs, videos, and other media related to McCain’s selection of Palin that have been posted on the wall and discussion boards, free and compiled for all to use when writing blogs and otherwise engaging in anti McCain/Palin activism.
More importantly, this site will be the point place for organizing against the McCain/Palin ticket – on the ground meet ups in different cities are in the works, as are a wall posting campaign, a blog, and a video. If you have any organizing ideas, please message Shelby or post them on the site!
Like Wikipedia, anyone can update the “Sarah Palin is NOT Hillary Clinton” page – and you are encouraged to do so! This is a community effort, so if you have an idea for a page or want to add links that you have found useful, go ahead – just be respectful, meaning no sexism, racism, homophobia or otherwise objectionable content.
Also, please visit the Cafe Press Shop for the group for all your anti McCain/Palin gear. All proceeds go to Emily’s List, an organization that supports pro-women, pro-choice candidates.
