How Do GreenTorch™ Exit Signs Work?
Photoluminescent exit signs are non-electrical, glow-in-the-dark exit signs. They work just like a glow-in-the-dark key chain or sticker. Photoluminescent exit signs are coated in a chemical that absorbs the light from ambient lighting in their vicinity and, when power is lost or the lights are turned out, they radiate this light and continue to glow. Photoluminescent exit signs are a perfect building safety choice for two reasons. One, they are energy efficient. Because they use no electricity, they lower energy costs and conserve resources. Two, they are extremely dependable in an emergency. They continue to provide light even when back up emergency power systems fail – and they’re bright enough to be seen through smoke. Photoluminescent exit signs are non-toxic, non-radioactive, and come in a variety of viewing distances. The pigments used on most photoluminescent exit signs will glow for up to 8 hours in the absence of ambient lighting. The chemical coating will generally continue to glow in the dark for up to fifteen years, and they’re nearly effortless to maintain

How can you help?
In your home, you probably do not need an exit sign. But, let’s stop for a minute and think about this.
In your everyday travels, how many stores or businesses do you walk into that have exit signs. And not just one? One exit sign can emit up to 40 KW of energy a year. Now, times that by one floor, or one building. The amount of energy consumed is astronomical. It all comes from our energy grid.
What happens after 30 years?
There are many exit signs that are already needing to be replaced and are damaged or leaking. Many wont work in a fire, and need energy and batteries. They are not always replaced on time, and are faulty.
Your voice counts.
Asking the manager to contact a Green Torch manufacturer will ensure safety, environmentally friendly standards, and energy savings in replacing their exit signs.
Such a simple little thing.
Who really thinks of exit signs? They are quiet, little signs out of the way. However, they become the most important feature in an emergency. For your safety, no matter how young or old you are…asking for a safer building to do business in is your right.
